Hi there,

I am building a DRSSTC and have a query about the typical output voltage of these high and low side drivers... Vcc is 15V. I need to design a gate drive xformer for a brick, 100A, 1200v device. I have looked at curves and around 17V gate drive seems optimal. Hence, on top of the calculations I have already made about inductance and magnetising current, I need to work out the correct turns ratio based on the output voltage of these drivers.

First attempts blew up my IGBTs instantly through overvoltage, I suspect.

Many thanks. This is my third coil. I've already had successful builds of a large vacuum tube coil and also a modulated 4Mhz class D RF power amplifier design.

I have run these driver chips with 1:1:1 GDTs with +- 15v output without any problem. Using a good ferrite core and about 14 turns of twisted 3-strand wire has worked well for me and given a good output waveform. Never fried an IGBT through gate overvoltage with this setup. Usually hard switching, overheating or some other failure. Having the correct gate resistor and diode is important though - there is a recent thread covering this topic in detail. Hope this helps.

Hi Graham,

Thanks for that reassurance. V helpful. Anyone please point me to the thread you're talking about as little chance of finding it randomly!

Many thanks,

Al
