I'm going to use a pair of IXDN630CI via GDT to drive H-bridge of CM300DU-24NFH at 70kHz. Are those driver ICs are up to task?

i remember from another thread that someones cm-something bricks take roughly 12A pk to turn on/off at a frequency that i do not recall. probably ~45khz. so you need half the rise/fall time and therefore double the current. thats ~24 amps in a 30 amp gate drie chip.

the only other things i can say is watch the heating, and that some say that the ixys driers are unrelieable, no names mentioned *ahemsteveward*. though derek woodroffe seems to have had some success with the 414's in smaller coils.

I have used 414s so a 630ci will work but it will have to be set up. you will need about 2 ohms in series and 20v drive you can use plastic fibers, optos, or magntic isolators to get galvonic isolation. all of thease types of drives have delay that may have to be considered

You loose a lot of the advantages of the higher peak current gate drive chips by using a GDT. Except for possible thermal considerations, lower rated gate drive chips would suffice.

What fiber transmitters/receivers are you using on you boards teravolt? I have yet to find any pairs that are less than $20 for a set.

Thats is what I'm concerned about.

teravolt, I'm going to use GDT, I don't realy want to bother with isolation. My driver has phase lead, so delay is not really an issue.

I don't think transferring high current through GDT should be an issue - I dont see any fundamental constraints. If GDT can transfer 9A, why it can't go with 30А?

I think, terravolt is using HFBR-2521Z/HFBR-1521Z pair, Im using them for my interrupter and found them susceptinble to coil's noise, so they require sheilding.

The leakage inductance of the GDT, and to a much lesser extent, its winding resistance, will limit the peak current from the gate drive chip to much less than 30 amps.

the plastic fibers are definatly saseptible to EMS like any hardware but I haven't had any problems. I get them from jameco electonics, best price, Even though moast poeple have sucsses with transformers and it is well practiced I dont like the fact that you can't get a pulse beond a cirtian width or problems with saturation

I think everyone drives their bricks way too fast. The IGBT is a bipolar device and the minority carriers give it inherent delays and rise/fall times. Driving the gate any faster than that just adds lots of crappy ringing to the gate voltage as seen by the dice.

Besides, you'll struggle to pump the full 30A out of those gate driver chips. The leakage inductance of the GDT and wiring will limit it, unless you take extreme measures. Because it's driving a capacitive load, the inductance has much more of an effect than you think.

true and the cm600's have 25khz max so being that we are driving the igbt's far out of there SOA what would you recomend. the best way that I know is to drive them a little harder to get the rise and fall times lower

I have tested HFBR receivers near my coil and they switched spontaneously. So, they definitely require sheilding. Do you have your electronics shielded?

I can use two GDTs for two halfbridges in bridge. That should half net inductance. I saw GDT being used with CM300s and CM600s, so GDT definitely isnt a bottleneck here.

I'm want to make a driver that is sutable for both - DRSSTCs and SSTCs. DRSSTCs requre high pulsed current, when SSTCs requre high power dissipation on driver. And IXDN630CI looks like a perfect choise.

As I understand, 30A drivers should suffice.
